AI-generated profile photos often share characteristics: they show a face clearly, against a clean background, with professional-quality lighting, at a standard square resolution (1024x1024, 512x512). The combination of an unusually high-quality portrait at an AI-standard square resolution with no EXIF data is a strong indicator of AI generation.

Deepfake portraits vs. AI avatars

There are two distinct categories of AI face imagery: deepfakes (which use a real person's face as a reference) and AI avatars (which generate entirely fictional faces). Deepfakes are more legally serious because they depict a real, identifiable person without consent. AI avatars depict no real individual and have no legal implications for a specific person. Distinguishing between them requires facial recognition or personal knowledge, forensic image analysis identifies AI generation but does not determine whose face is depicted.
