Forensic methods to verify photo authenticity

Reliable photo authentication uses multiple forensic signals. EXIF metadata analysis checks for the presence and plausibility of camera data, a photo from a claimed 2020 iPhone should have Apple software signatures, GPS data, and specific metadata patterns. Sensor noise analysis measures the presence and statistical distribution of random pixel noise that is inherent to camera sensors. Error Level Analysis (for JPEG images) can reveal regions of inconsistent compression that indicate compositing. Dimension analysis checks whether the image size matches known AI generator output constraints.

Reverse image search as a complement

Reverse image search can confirm that an image was published earlier than claimed, or that it is a modified version of a known photograph. Google Lens, TinEye, and Yandex Images each index different image databases and may catch different versions of the same image. However, reverse image search cannot detect images that were newly generated by AI, it only finds existing matches. A fresh AI-generated image will show zero results, which is not evidence of authenticity.
