The full conversation including the extorter's username and platform.
Any payment demands with the wallet address or account number.
The intimate image they claim to have, if they have shown a preview.
Any links or accounts the extorter has mentioned where they might post.

Hour One: Federal Reporting

Sextortion is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 875(d) (interstate communications with intent to extort) and is coupled with the TAKE IT DOWN Act for any threatened distribution. Report immediately to:

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. Include screenshots and the wallet or payment account.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's CyberTipline at cybertipline.org if you are under 18 or the extorter is targeting a minor.
Local law enforcement, with the federal report number.

Federal investigators take sextortion seriously, especially when minors are involved. Your report contributes to active cases against the same extorter targeting other victims.

Hour Two: Pre-emptive Removal Notices

You do not have to wait for the extorter to actually post. Under the TAKE IT DOWN Act, once intimate images are distributed without consent, the 48-hour removal clock starts. To get ahead of distribution:

File pre-emptive notices with the platforms most commonly used by the extorter (often Telegram, Discord, or specific subreddits they have mentioned).
Set up monitoring across major image platforms so any appearance triggers an immediate Section 223a notice.
If specific people have been threatened with receipt of the images (family, employer, school), notify them privately and get the images blocked at the email or messaging level.

Hour Six: Lock Down Your Digital Footprint

Sextortion extorters typically build a full profile before contacting you. They know your employer, your school, your family. Reduce their leverage by:

Setting all social media to private.
Removing your phone number and email from data broker sites.
Alerting your employer's IT or HR if you have one, in writing.
Forwarding the extorter's contact information to your bank if any payment information was shared.

Hour 24: Legal Counsel

If the extorter is in the United States and identifiable, a federal prosecution is the strongest possible deterrent. Federal sextortion sentences in 2025 averaged 8.4 years. A criminal defense attorney with cybercrime experience can coordinate with the FBI agent assigned to your case.

If the extorter is overseas (which is the majority of cases), criminal prosecution is harder but financial disruption is not. Coordinate with the FTC and your bank to flag the wallet address.

Paying any amount. Payment guarantees additional demands within 48 hours.
Engaging with the extorter to negotiate. Every message increases the perceived value of the threat.
Believing claims about footage or contacts that have not been shown.
Delaying federal reporting because of embarrassment. Federal investigators handle these cases professionally and your report is confidential.
