Is this different from doing a Google reverse image search myself?

Yes. A standard reverse image search compares the exact pixels of a photo file. If a scammer crops, resizes, filters, or screenshots a stolen photo, pixel-based search often misses it. A biometric face scan reads the geometry of the face itself, which stays consistent across those changes, so it finds matches that reverse image search does not.

What if I don't have a real photo, only their profile picture?

A profile picture is exactly what you need. You do not need a high-resolution original, a clear screenshot of the face is enough to run a scan.

What should I do if I find their photo under a different name?
