The combined situation

A student at your school has used AI tools to create deepfake intimate imagery using photographs from social media, the school yearbook, or shared school events. Title IX requires the school to investigate regardless of whether law enforcement is involved. When this scenario plays out on Bluesky specifically, removal proceeds through the statutory takedown process under 47 USC 223a combined with the scenario specific response that school cases require.

Why this combination is high risk

Bluesky's open ATProto network allows third party clients and appViews to display the same content. A removal from the official Bluesky app does not always remove from third party clients. For classmate deepfake cases, school-aged perpetrators often underestimate the legal consequences of deepfake creation because the ai tools are marketed as harmless. federal and state law makes the conduct a serious offense regardless of the perpetrator's age.

How removal proceeds

Bluesky accepts NCII reports through its in app moderation flow and through its trust and safety email. The PDS architecture means content is hosted on individual personal data servers in addition to the network appView. Schools have an independent legal obligation under Title IX that runs parallel to law enforcement. The school investigation can produce remedies including disciplinary action and victim accommodations that law enforcement cannot.
